What are scorpions?

A fact about scorpions that is not commonly known is that they actually fall under the same category as spiders – they are arachnids. Scorpions and spiders are distant cousins. Like spiders, scorpions have eight legs, no antenna or wings, and they have a strictly carnivorous diet that contains mostly insects. Unlike spiders, scorpions can be recognized by their front pincers (also called pedipalps) and their long tails. The tail end has a venomous stinger that is used to paralyze their prey or to scare off predators. Scorpions do not have bones. Instead, they have thick, flexible, exoskeletons made out of chitin, much like the shells of shrimp.

Are scorpions dangerous?

Fortunately, most species of scorpions do not have venom strong enough to harm humans in any significant way. Most scorpion stings will feel like bee stings and may leave the sting site tender and painful for several days. While all scorpions are venomous, only a few species of scorpion are actually fatal to humans. No scorpions in Texas are known to be dangerous to humans. However, there have been cases of allergic reactions that occurred due to the venom of scorpions.

Why do I have a scorpion problem?

The natural habitat of scorpions is usually dry and desert-like. However, some species can be found living in forested or rocky areas. Most of the time, scorpions prefer to stay away from urban environments. However, new construction has been known to push scorpions out of their habitat and onto the property of neighbors. Additionally, water sources that attract insects to your yard may also eventually attract scorpions that are looking for easy access to a food source.

Where will I find scorpions?

Some scorpions prefer dry and sandy habitats, while others would rather hide beneath a rock or in a forested area.
