What are spiders?

While it may be easy to slip up and mistake spiders for insects, they are actually better categorized as arachnids and are closely related to ticks. These pests are some of the most common home-invading pests and can be found all throughout the United States, including here in Texas. a spider crawling outside of a home in Houston texas.

Spiders have some characteristics that differentiate them from insects. They have eight legs rather than six, and they have no wings or antennae. Spiders also eat insects as their primary source of food. It may be quite unpleasant to find spiders inside your home. Spiders are actually helpful creatures when they’re found out in nature as they help to keep the populations of insects at a reasonable level. When they invade our homes, however, they become much more harmful than they are helpful!

Are spiders dangerous?

Most spider species, such as the wolf spider, are not harmful to humans other than being a nuisance to deal with. When wolf spiders invade, the most you will need to worry about is their significant, frightening appearance and a possible bite. Fortunately, wolf spider bites are not dangerous, despite the pain they cause. The real danger comes when poisonous arachnids such as a black widow or brown recluse spiders find a way into your home. Bites from these spiders can cause significant neurological or tissue damage, depending on the amount of venom injected and your sensitivity to the bite. If you suspect that you or someone you know has been bitten by a brown recluse or black widow spider, you must seek medical help immediately.

Why do I have a spider problem?

What many people do not know is, if you have a spider problem, chances are they’ve been hanging around for quite a while. Sometimes spiders do come indoors, however, usually following their food source. If you have a current insect problem in your home, spiders won’t be too far behind them. Once inside, they may forget how to get back out or choose to stay if there are plenty of insects to feed on.

Where will I find spiders?

You’ve probably heard the saying, “they’re more scared of you than you are of them” about spiders before, and it’s actually true! Most spiders actually prefer to stay away from areas with lots of human activity and are quite reclusive by nature. In fact, they would instead find a beautiful corner, attic, or shelf to hide in, away from the hustle and bustle of other creatures. When spiders invade your home, they may choose to hide in closets, high shelves, corners, attics, wall spaces, boxes, and any other place that keeps them hidden from your sight.
