What are rodents?

Rodents are small mammals with a set of large, constantly-growing front incisors. Their front teeth, located in both the upper and lower jaws, are used to break open hard seeds and nuts. Common rodent names you may be familiar with include roof rats, Norway rats, house mice, and field mice. These four types of rodents are some of the most common home invaders and can be between 2 and 18 inches long, depending on their species. Again, depending on their exact species, a rodent’s fur may be a mixture of blacks, grays, browns, and tans. Other rodents may have dark-colored bodies and lighter bellies. In Texas, mice and rats are especially common pest invaders.

Are rodents dangerous?

When roof rats or house mice get into your home, they can create a lot of problems for you and your family. Rodents must continuously find things to chew on to wear down their teeth. While they usually eat on nuts or seeds in the wild, they tend to do a lot of damage when they enter residential or commercial buildings. In fact, both mice and rats have been known to cause structural damage, start house fires by chewing through electrical wiring, and cause floods when they eat through major piping systems. And as if the cost of repairs isn’t enough, all rodents can carry multiple diseases onto your property and into your home. These diseases are transmitted through contaminated food items, water sources, or surfaces. They can be harmful and even life-threatening under the right circumstances.

Where will I find rodents?

As we previously mentioned, rodents prefer to stay out of sight when they enter your home and will generally only venture out to forage at night or when you’re not around. You may find rodents if you inspect; attics, wall voids, under porches, high cabinets, shelves, storage areas, utility sheds, and your garage.

Where do I get rid of rodents?

It’s important to understand that you should never try to handle a rodent infestation on your own. Rodents are capable of reproducing rapidly, which means even if you get rid of some on your own, your problem is far from over. Additionally, rodents may become aggressive when cornered and can transmit dangerous diseases when they bite.
